About the Dances.

While we compete and dance many styles, most of our classes focus on the 10 International style ballroom and Latin dances, which are described below. If you're interested in learning American style ballroom or any other social dances, many of our club members will be there to help you learn!
Standard
Modern ballroom (standard) dances travel around the floor in a circle and are danced in a characteristic closed hold. They are easily spotted by the long ballgowns worn by the followers.
  • (Slow) Waltz - a swinging, elegant dance with a gradual rise and fall over three counts
  • Tango - a dramatic, passionate dance of Argentine origin with sharp rhythm
  • Quickstep - a bubbly and bouncy dance usually performed to upbeat swing music
  • Foxtrot - a smooth and classic dance, conjuring images of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers
  • Viennese Waltz - the oldest of the ballroom dances, known for its classic lilt and constant turns and spins
Latin
The Latin dances mostly draw influence from various Latin American folk dances and merge their unique rhythms and cultural narratives with the Western ballroom and ballet traditions.
  • Cha Cha - a flirtacious, cheeky, Cuban dance with a signature rhythmic pattern from which the dance derives its name
  • Rumba - a slow and sensual dance, also originating from Cuba, contrasting sharp lines and movements with slow and fluid melodies
  • Samba - a Brazilian dance with countless overlapping rhythms, whose upbeat nature is expressed with a unique bounce action
  • Jive - the only Latin dance of North American origin, the jive is a direct descendant of Lindy hop, swing, and other jazz vernacular dances
  • Paso Doble - a theatrical dance which conjures the pomp and bombast of the Spanish bullfight (and was actually created by the French as a parody of the Spaniards!)
